Product details

Traumatized by the horrors of World War I, Moriz Seeler, born in 1896 in Greifenberg, Pomerania, arrives in Berlin in 1916: discharged from the military as "unfit." He begins to study and write. At the cabaret "Schall und Rauch," he performs polished parodies of literary celebrities, making a name for himself. In 1918, he publishes the book "Der rasende Pegasus" with Hans Heinrich von Twardowski: a collection of malicious commentary on the literary scene in Berlin. In 1922, Seeler founds the "Junge Bühne," a matinee theater dedicated exclusively to the world premieres of new plays by unknown authors. Works by Bertolt Brecht, Marieluise Fleisser, Hans Henny Jahnn, Carl Zuckmayer, Arnolt Bronnen, and others are performed. Seeler also becomes a film producer, backing "Filmstudio 1929," which includes aspiring writers and directors such as Billy Wilder, Robert and Kurt Siodmak, as well as cinematographer Eugen Schüfftan. With amateurs, he shoots the film "Menschen am Sonntag" – a sensational success, then avant-garde, now a classic of film history. With the rise of the National Socialists, everything suddenly comes to an end for Moriz Seeler. He goes into hiding. His emigration fails. He is arrested and forced into labor. In 1942, he is deported to Riga, where he is presumably shot. The "Reichsanzeiger" lists September 8, 1942, as his date of death.
