The narrow-gauge railway Mosbach - Mudau was the last 1,000 mm gauge line of the German Federal Railways on the mainland. Built as a private railway, the operation of the 28 km long line was later taken over by the German Reichsbahn Society. Throughout its existence, the railway struggled for survival. It was only when the Federal Railway considered the closure of the line that some modernity arrived in the form of new diesel locomotives and passenger cars in the 1960s. But it was too late: the cessation of operations had long been decided by the DB. Thus, in June 1973, trains last rolled up to the lonely heights of the Odenwald.
