When retired construction contractor Georg Reifegerste digs a building pit for a friend who is a farmer, human bones and an old silver chain come to light. Shortly after, Georg's housekeeper falls out of the window. It turns out that someone gave her a push. The clever young chief inspector Max Engel begins the investigation, vigorously supported by Georg. Soon, the unlikely duo stumbles upon another murder victim and uncovers how these vastly different cases are connected.
