The compatibility of family and career is a widely discussed topic, particularly affecting women. They want to be employed and are urgently needed as skilled professionals. However, in light of demographic changes, they should not forget their role as mothers. Politically, the expansion of childcare places is proclaimed as a solution to the compatibility problem. But what do women themselves want? This qualitative study with mothers in leadership positions provides a broader perspective on the issue, moving away from the currently one-sided debate about individual framework conditions. It not only addresses the question of how to organize daily life but also explores the causes and influencing factors behind the desire for children and a career. The study highlights the complexity of the topic and shows that simply expanding childcare options is not enough.
