German Western productions are primarily represented by the iconic Karl May film adaptations of the 1960s. However, the German Wild West film has its traditions dating back to the silent film era. Actors such as Lex Barker, Pierre Brice, Stewart Granger, Hans Albers, Hellmut Lange, Gojko Mitic, and more recently Wotan Wilke Möhring and Nik Xhelilaj have embodied the men of the West. The cinema and television audience holds this unique and special genre variation in cultural memory. "Wild West made in Germany," the comprehensive handbook on the German Western, describes this very specific phenomenon through its films and stars. Author Reiner Boller has researched the topic for years, visited archives and filming locations, and personally spoken with many of those involved, especially in the classic Karl May films.
