Albania's cultural landscape has been cultivated since the time of the Illyrians. They were followed by the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. From the main port of Durrës, which Catullus referred to as the "Taberna of the Adriatic," the most important trade route to Constantinople once led. Before Tirana became the capital in 1920, Shkodra and Korça were cultural focal points. Typical Balkan architecture can be found in Berat, the city of a thousand windows, as well as in Gjirokastra and Ohrid. Many places feature acropolises, Byzantine churches, Ottoman bridges, mosques, and bazaars. Venetian, French, and Italian architectural influences are also evident. Since 1990, Albania has been undergoing a rapid urbanization process. While this initially proceeded without control, there is now an effort to reclaim public space through rational urban development. The example of former Tirana mayor Edi Rama demonstrates how concrete buildings can be transformed.
