"Truly Italian," said the famous city planner Camillo Sitte, about Salzburg's "magnificent arrangement of squares around the cathedral" - and this is not only because it is the work of Italian masters. The Residenzplatz is the largest and perhaps the most beautiful of the ensemble, which consists of a total of five squares, thanks to its lavish Baroque fountain. Archbishop Wolf Dietrich had 55 houses demolished and the cathedral cemetery relocated to create a representative square for festivities, parades, and receptions. The square took its final form in the second half of the 17th century. Today, it provides a charming backdrop for the Christkindlmarkt, the Rupertikirtag, and many other events. After several attempts to redesign the square, the time has finally come: Architects Erich Wagner and Eduard Widmann are embracing the Baroque concept and bringing it to life.
