Product details

To do justice to the philosophically challenging experience of dreams, the author adopts a phenomenological approach. He first addresses the condemnation of dreams throughout the history of philosophy, specifically the separation between dream and reality that was already established in myth, solidified in antiquity, and ultimately asserted in modern times. The dream became the epitome of the dubious and irrational, marking the boundaries of reasonable reality. The subsequent appreciation, as well as criticism, of psychoanalytic attempts to rehabilitate dreams leads to the question of how a phenomenologically appropriate approach could proceed. Ates examines in his 'Phenomenology of Dreams' how the oneiric experience can even be possible, what faculties must be present for dreams to occur in a form of naive realism, despite the discontinuities in (self-)perception and the sometimes bizarre and radical metamorphoses.
