Since the collapse of communist regimes, diverse forms of remembrance have emerged in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, as well as in Africa, Asia, Australia, and America: memorial sites, museums, monuments, memorials, sacred buildings, and sculpture parks commemorate the communist dictatorships and their victims, as well as the opposition and resistance, and the overcoming of these unjust regimes. This volume presents a selection of 119 memorial sites in 35 countries. In addition to an overview of the history of the respective crimes, the individual contributions illuminate the creation of these memorials and document the efforts to bring the memory of the victims of communist tyranny back into public consciousness.
