Foreword

More and more people are creating documents using computers and practicing publishing from their desks, or as it has become commonly known, desktop publishing. The expectations for documents created in this way are increasing. In addition to merely processing information, we are taking on tasks that were previously handled by various individuals, such as secretaries, graphic designers, editors, or typesetters. This allows us to achieve shorter turnaround times, lower costs, and the opportunity for authors to have a greater influence on design. The trade-off is that we must acquire a good portion of the expertise that the previous participants possessed in order to achieve similarly high-quality results. This book therefore aims to teach non-typesetters and typographic novices the fundamentals of typography and its implementation in DTP programs.
