Intensive care medicine presents specific medical and organizational challenges. The range of therapy and treatment methods requires cooperative and interdisciplinary collaboration. At the same time, an intensive care unit can only operate successfully if the necessary organizational, logistical, and personnel conditions are established, and standardized medical processes with functioning interfaces are implemented. The demands on leadership personnel in intensive care medicine go beyond just optimal patient care. Good management in intensive care requires a broad spectrum of leadership skills, business knowledge, and, not least, the optimal planning and management of the (usually scarce) resources of personnel, space, time, and finances.
