Since the doping scandal involving the Spanish doctor Fuentes, the public has become aware of the extent and professionalism with which doping is practiced in elite sports. However, doping is by no means just a phenomenon of success-hungry athletes; it is an extreme among many in our performance-oriented society characterized by body culture, fitness obsession, chronic stress, medicalization, and addiction. This book scientifically presents the medical and psychological aspects of all classes of substances and methods used in doping for the first time – also in the context of society, politics, economics, and law. The author, Norman Schöffel, is an ultramarathon runner and a doctor, and he sheds light on the phenomenon of doping as a societal problem for which there are no simple solutions.
