Eleanor Roosevelt was the First Lady during most of Ruth Bader's childhood. Ruth's mother, who greatly admired the First Lady, often read Mrs. Roosevelt's newspaper articles "My Day" aloud to Ruth. Eight months after President Roosevelt's death, Eleanor Roosevelt was appointed by President Truman as the U.S. Delegate to the newly established United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations Charter stated in its preamble that one of its goals was to restore faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equality of rights of men and women, as well as of large and small nations. In April 1946, Eleanor Roosevelt became the first chairperson of the newly formed UN Commission on Human Rights in line with this goal, following the aftermath of World War II.
