Are the European states drifting apart again after 60 years of increasingly intense and extensive integration? Are we losing our sense of European commonalities? The "European Places of Remembrance" contribute to this assessment. Authors from more than 15 countries follow the premise that there are numerous places of remembrance that hold significance for Europeans from all nations, shaping their identity and which we consider when we say "Europe." For the first time, not the places of remembrance of a single nation, region, or era are described, but concepts, locations, events, artworks, and consumer goods that are of pan-European importance. The first volume of the work addresses, starting from the myth of Europe, fundamental factors of European self-understanding, such as Christianity, Judaism, antiquity, and the Enlightenment.
