In postmodernism, literature steps out of its competitive relationship with historiography by prioritizing fictionality over authenticity. This allows writers to utilize myth not only as a model for explaining historical reality. The circularity of myth inherently includes its connection to the present. The fundamental patterns of myth prove to be a still relevant form for depicting the core issues of human existence. The application of the structure of myth, into which various historical events are projected, leads Christoph Ransmayr to create new types of historical novels, which are referred to in research as metahistorical, revisionist, and as a remythologization of history.
