In shamanism, a set of techniques aimed at inducing altered states of consciousness is employed within a ritual framework. These techniques include the use of psychoactive substances, rhythmic stimulation (drumming, rattling, dancing), breath control, body postures (trance positions), and more. The resulting shamanic state of consciousness is experienced as ecstasy or a journey into another reality. In rave and party culture, techniques that are partially borrowed from or related to shamanism are deliberately used to enable ravers to have ecstatic experiences. In cyber culture, virtual worlds are created that mimic other realities. Nevertheless, there are certain parallels between cyberspace and shamanic consciousness. Finally, the term "artificial paradise," coined by Charles Baudelaire, is critically examined.
