In 1901, a young man sat on the holy mountain Arunachala in South India when a scholar approached him and posed burning questions about the nature of truth. Since he did not speak at that time, the answers were given in silence and written in the sand. The young man became the famous saint Sri Ramana Maharshi. Twenty years after this encounter, in the early days of the Ramana Ashram, he edited his answers himself, resulting in the first ashram publication of his essential teachings.
