Product details

The general peace of 1802 brought France happiness and prestige. Countless foreigners—mostly English—flocked to Paris to visit the sites that had gained immortal significance during the Revolution and to see the great man who had quelled the tumultuous waves. The center of the world seemed to have shifted to the Seine, where a structured life of work and social enjoyment unfolded. It was no longer the wild frenzy of the early days of the Directory, when everyone was glad to have survived the terror but still uncertain about the coming day; instead, it was a moderate and peaceful enjoyment, no longer the brazen pursuit of dirty profits, but organized labor and honorable earnings. The moderate bourgeois element that Napoleon had ruthlessly crushed in Vendémiaire was still haunted by the grim images, as he assured.
