Violence and disaster representations hold a prominent position in public discourse. In particular, international Islamist terrorism has been in the global media spotlight since the attacks of September 11, 2001, and remains one of the most pressing and controversially discussed topics in reporting. Metaphors play a special role in the depiction and communication of violence, threat, and fear scenarios, as they represent the complex phenomenon of terrorism in a vivid way through analogies. This interdisciplinary anthology contains essays that address the relationship between language, cognition, and emotion in mass media reporting on violence and terrorism. Current findings from cognitive media linguistics are presented alongside studies and analyses from communication and media science.
