Writers such as Alfred Döblin, Marieluise Fleisser, Arthur Schnitzler, and Robert Walser were creating innovative works in the project of modernity, more or less simultaneously with James Joyce and Marcel Proust, as well as Ambrose Bierce and Willa Cather.
