The nation was the central project of the bourgeois 19th century. In this context, national history emerged as both a discipline and a genre, aiming to trace the origins of the nation deep in the past and to legitimize claims to people and territories. At the same time, it produced a repertoire of images that, popularized through schools and festive culture, became the basis for political communication. But how did such a constructed national history adapt to an environment that was largely characterized by multiculturalism and distinguished by a plurality of confessional communities of memory? This study, focusing on the bourgeois-Serbian culture of remembrance, explores this question for Habsburg Bosnia-Herzegovina.
