Peace is just a pause between two wars. Vandam was one of those who set it in motion on November 17, 1989, when the Velvet Revolution began to unfold on the National Street in the Old Town of Prague, sweeping away the communist regime a few weeks later. Back then, Vandam was a young police officer, a suburban hero up in the concrete housing estate of the new Prague, which was carved out of the forest in the midst of rugged nature. There, as little boys, they secretly played war; there, Vandam searched for his father when he once again threatened to hang himself, until he finally jumped over the balcony railing. Twenty-five years later, Vandam still lives in the housing estate of his childhood. He is no longer a hero but a loser: removed from the police force due to acts of violence, he fights his way through life as a lonely thug.
