In 2011, UNESCO designated the centuries-old beech forests around Serrahn as a World Natural Heritage site. This title places this part of the Müritz National Park on par with significant landscapes such as the Galapagos Islands, Yellowstone, or the Grand Canyon National Park. Since the mid-19th century, the Serrahner forests served as a game park for the grand dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
