Year after year, millions of people visit our national parks, nature parks, museums, and cultural heritage sites. But what does this evoke in them? How does a tree, a historical monument, or an exhibit become meaningful to people? On behalf of the US National Park Service, Freeman Tilden traveled to numerous parks and museums across the USA to find answers to these questions. He summarized his experiences in his 1957 book "Interpreting Our Heritage." It is still regarded worldwide as essential introductory literature when it comes to understanding how connections can be formed between visitors and their natural and cultural heritage, leading to an attitude of appreciation. The book, which has provided a structure to the concept of nature and cultural interpretation, is now available for the first time in German.
