Large polyp stony corals have been among the most popular invertebrates in reef aquaristics since the early days of the 1970s. At that time, bubble corals from the genus Plerogyra and the brain coral (Trachyphyllia geoffroyi) were particularly popular. Although the technical standards of reef aquariums back then were relatively low compared to today, these cnidarians often thrived very well. Bubble and brain corals kept in aquariums frequently reached remarkable ages and grew to impressive sizes during this period.
