Somatic anthropology (also known as anatomical anthropology) discusses the characteristics of human body structure in its various peculiarities and deviations influenced by race, gender, and ancestry. These peculiarities can be expressed in all organ systems, but they are primarily manifested in the most noticeable features that affect external appearance, such as hair, eye, and skin texture and color, as well as the bony (skeletal) structure that determines shape. This field therefore overlaps with that of ethnology. The methods of somatic anthropology include, on one hand, as accurate descriptions as possible, and on the other hand, measurements, meaning the numerical ratios of certain body parts to each other or various dimensions of a body part among themselves. Both approaches are supported by the most precise methods possible.
