Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) is arguably the most significant and influential author of supernatural fiction of the 20th century. A lifelong resident of Providence, Rhode Island, many of his stories are set in the fear-haunted towns of an imaginary region in Massachusetts or in the cosmic expanses that exist beyond space and time. Since his early death, he has been recognized as a master of fantasy fiction and is considered one of the most important American writers, surpassed only by Edgar Allan Poe, while his relatively small body of work has influenced countless imitators and forms the basis of a global industry of books, games, and films based on his concepts.
