"German contemporary authors? I only know Grass!" - This question is often heard by Germanists or those familiar with Germany when discussing contemporary literature from the neighboring country with a Pole. A Polish reader would have no problem naming a few English or American authors whose books they have recently read. However, knowledge of German fiction in Poland is vague. This was confirmed in 2004 by the well-known Polish writer Olga Tokarczuk, who responded to the question of how well contemporary German literature is known in her homeland by saying: "We have translations of Günter Grass, of Bernhard Schlink, that is the contemporary German literature that is known in Poland." This seems paradoxical, as statistics show that since 2005, the Republic of Poland has been among the leading countries in terms of literary translations.
