A severe polio epidemic shakes Newark in 1944, threatening children with paralysis or death. Only the young physical education teacher Bucky remains calm and devotedly cares for his students as a reserve. However, the feeling of futility grows steadily alongside the desire for personal happiness. When Bucky gives in to his girlfriend Marcia's wish and accompanies her to a children's summer camp, war and disease seem to fade into the distance.
