Couples play a crucial role in various areas of our present, whether in media, film, literature, theater, politics, or law. Science is also increasingly recognizing them as independent subjects of research: Beyond individual actors or subjects on one side and groups, collectives, or families on the other, genuine couple studies are establishing themselves in various academic disciplines, such as history, psychology, or sociology. In the performing and visual arts, there are also diverse explorations of the figure of the couple, although it is notable that the engagement with couples from a theater, art, and media studies as well as aesthetic perspective—aside from numerous exhibition catalogs on artist couples—is still in its infancy.
