The Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith (C.V.) was founded in 1893 in Berlin-Charlottenburg. It was not until 15 years later that women were allowed to become involved. The C.V. grew to become the largest Jewish organization in the German Empire. It was originally established to combat anti-Semitism but evolved into a 'society of convictions' where German-Jewish identities were negotiated. In "Bürgerlich, jüdisch, weiblich," the female members of the C.V. are for the first time the focus of interest. The study examines their specific areas of work as well as the assigned roles and changing gender norms during a period that spans from the introduction of women's suffrage after the end of World War I in 1918 to the forced dissolution of the C.V. by the National Socialists at the end of 1938.
