For many years, two narratives have dominated the collective memory and historiography regarding the 'Jeckes,' the migrants from Germany and Central Europe. One narrative articulates that they only integrated to a limited extent into the existing Jewish society of the British Mandate territory of Palestine and Israel, while the other emphasizes their positive contribution to the modernization of the country. These narratives are not necessarily competing; rather, they complement each other, both being based on the same normative principle—the development of city, land, and state as the standard by which a migrant group is to be measured. However persistent both narratives are, the history of the Jeckes is increasingly being written through innovative historiographical and cultural studies approaches and methods, characteristic of modern, including German-Jewish, history.
