The Zionist history of Berlin is undoubtedly linked to the biographies of numerous activists who organized themselves from the late 19th century onwards. Heinrich Loewe, whom Barbara Schäfer called "the prime example of an entire era," undoubtedly played a crucial role in the Zionist appropriation of the metropolis. His gravestone in the Old Cemetery in Tel Aviv rightly states: "One of the founders of the Zionist movement." Loewe, born in Wanzleben and a Berliner since 1933, was involved in numerous founding of Zionist associations around the turn of the century and worked for many years as a journalist and editor-in-chief. Early on, he undertook several months-long trips to Palestine, was a delegate at the 1st Zionist Congress, and later even served as a speaker on Palestinian cultural issues at the event opened in Berlin in 1907.
