Product details

Although Expressionism calls for a break with the traditions of the parental generation, expressionist artists frequently draw on religious motifs in their subjects. The third issue of Expressionism systematically addresses this phenomenon and goes beyond previous approaches to explore the role of religion in the various forms of expressionist art. It becomes clear that the relationship between Expressionism and religion is quite diverse, as it incorporates both biblical themes and African art. The issue fundamentally questions the reason for the notable interest in religion and finds an answer in the experience of modernity. It includes essays on the engagement with the Judas theme in various arts, as well as on Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Alfred Döblin, Hugo Ball, and Emmy Hennings, along with discussions of expressionist spirituality in the poetry of Georg Ausleger and Johannes Urzidil.
