Product details

Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) is arguably one of the most distinctive and influential photographers of her generation. In 1936, she became the first female staff photographer for the popular magazine LIFE, marking the beginning of her career as a leading photojournalist in the USA. Just a few weeks after the United States entered World War II, she received accreditation as a war correspondent in the spring of 1942 and photographed in the following years in Britain, North Africa, Italy, and finally Germany. "The Armoring of the Gaze" provides the first comprehensive study of this important phase of her career. For the first time, it draws on extensive visual and textual material from her archive, including several thousand photographs and contact sheets, the photographer's notes and correspondence, as well as numerous publications in LIFE and Bourke-White's own work.
