The contributions gathered in this volume on the topic of wine and Judaism stem from a symposium held in Mainz in 2012. The aim was to present and analyze the cultural and historical significance of the subject from various perspectives and across different epochs. Literary, historical, and social-historical aspects were considered, as well as gender issues. While previous research primarily focused on religious aspects, "Wine and Judaism" shifts the attention to culturally and historically relevant texts and phenomena in a broader sense. The contributions in this volume span from Late Antiquity, particularly the foundational narrative (aggadic) texts of rabbinic literature that are still significant today, through the Middle Ages with its numerous testimonies of magical practices, and beyond.
