Are you there, God? Who hasn't been troubled by this question when suffering, pain, and distress invade life? God's ways often seem unclear to us, suddenly becoming dark, charged with tension, and foreign. Questions that we hardly dare to ask arise within us: "Are you there, God? Love, suffering, and injustice in our world, in our own lives. Where are you?" The men and women of the Bible pose these questions with great clarity. When we turn to them, we hear in the biblical word a perhaps surprising sound that is nonetheless a sound of life, faith, and renewal. This book aims to bear witness to such listening, without shying away from the challenges of external and internal questions: thinking and prayer, analytical questioning and worship, argumentative discourse and meditation are not opposites.
