A poor fisherman spares a magical flounder and is granted his wish for some prosperity. However, his wife's desires are not satisfied with this. Her wishes grow larger, more greedy, and more expensive. Initially, the flounder fulfills her demands as well. But when the fisherman's wife wishes to be as powerful as God, she finds herself back in her humble dwelling, where she has always lived. "The Fisherman and His Wife" thrives not only on the story and its moral but also on the language. This is particularly evident in the recurring Low German phrase "Manntje, Manntje, Timpe Te, Buttje, Buttje in der See, myne Frau, de Ilsebill, will nich so, as ik wohl will."
