The Gospel of Matthew has been regarded as the most important of the New Testament gospels throughout the history of the Church. Various theological movements have cited Matthew: both those advocating for a piety of the poor and those who view the papacy as established through him. The "weary and burdened," whom God accepts without preconditions, stand alongside those whom Matthew threatens with hellish torment. On one hand, the law is considered valid down to the last detail, while on the other hand, Jesus surpasses everything old and previously valid with his "But I say to you." In the Christian-Jewish dialogue, Matthew is also sharply criticized. In scholarly discussions, the question is debated whether Matthew is still rooted in Judaism or has long since separated from it.
