The Gospel of Matthew has been regarded as the most important of the New Testament gospels throughout the history of the Church. Various theological movements have cited Matthew, from representatives of a pious poverty to those who see the papacy as established through him. The "weary and burdened," whom God accepts without any prior conditions, stand alongside those whom Matthew threatens with hellish torments. On one hand, the law is considered valid down to the last jot and tittle, while on the other hand, Jesus surpasses everything old and previously valid with his "But I say to you." In the Christian-Jewish dialogue, Matthew is also fiercely criticized. In academic discussions, there is debate over whether Matthew is still rooted in Judaism or has long since separated from it.
