Neun
German, Andrzej Stasiuk, 2004Product details
Pawel, a young businessman who has made a modest living in the textile trade, awakens in a landscape of ruins. The bathroom mirror is shattered, tubes, brushes, and small bottles are scattered on the floor, and clothes are torn from the wardrobe. He leaves his apartment and drives through Warsaw, driven by restlessness and fear. He is in debt, being pursued, and needs money. A friend, Jacek, whom he turns to for help, narrowly escapes a robbery and is also on the run. Stasiuk tells this story from the criminal underworld in a way that is both unremarkable and oppressive. Without commentary, precise as an ever-present camera eye, he follows his protagonists from location to location: through train stations and highways, across industrial wastelands and hotel ruins, wild gardens and muddy paths, rundown courtyards, and finally onto the rooftops.
