Product details

In Immanuel Kant, the leading representative of the philosophical Enlightenment, and the visionary Emanuel Swedenborg, we find two seemingly opposing figures of the 18th century. At the same time, Swedenborg was one of the few authors to whom Kant dedicated a separate work, "The Dreams of a Spirit-Seer." Since then, Kant and Swedenborg research has controversially debated the significance of Swedenborg for Kant's critical philosophy, yielding quite different results. Is the radical rejection of Swedenborg and the philosophical rationalism he is presumed to represent the only interpretation of Kant's dreams? Can we speak of a later rehabilitation of Swedenborg by Kant, and how should this change be assessed? Did Kant not only dismiss Swedenborg but also adopt important elements of his teachings? Or must Swedenborg's role be reduced merely to a negative foil for Kant's later philosophy? In this volume, philosophers, religious scholars, theologians, and literary scholars from six countries present their interpretations of the contentious relationship between Kant's critical philosophy and Swedenborg's visionary rationalism.
