In the age of large organizations, time has become scarce. Time pressure is a common phenomenon. Glancing at the clock and reaching for the calendar in one’s pocket have become routine movements. Scheduling difficulties drive up phone costs. Simple red folders with content that is no longer urgent, urgent folders, and very urgent folders populate the desk and its surroundings. Some push themselves into the spotlight with their position right in the middle of the desk and a special note saying "Appointment matter!" competing for attention. The focus on deadlines and deadline-driven priorities dictates the rhythm of work and the choice of its themes. With these words, Luhmann's brilliant essay begins, published in 1971, and it is considered one of the most striking texts on the phenomenon of time. It precisely outlines how one can ruin their thinking through a performance concept solely bound to deadlines, as described two years ago by FAZ journalist Christian Geyer under the headline "Is Hurrying Our Guiding Speed?" In this sense, he continues Luhmann's thread by stating that everything urgent is considered important because the important itself falls out of view, and the burden of what needs to be done beforehand effectively crushes it. What remains is the vague feeling that one is getting to "nothing" anymore - neither in action nor in thought. This precisely expresses the analytical core of all deceleration debates: the threat to the ability to think.
