In Between - that means, in this case, between the starting point and the end point of the long journey on the Trans-Siberian railway, between the centers of the big cities, where there is still room for a wide view and a wandering imagination. In Between - that also means: between the clear experiences, far from one's own culture, a different experience of space and time. And it means: between the narrow walls of the train compartment, several days, with complete strangers. Katrin Streicher made this long journey and tried to capture being on the road in pictures: not in tourist photos that aim at spectacular landscapes or the seemingly picturesque of the foreigner, but in shots that at first glance have something of a casual quality: moments of pause at a station, fellow travelers musing, eating or playing cards, everyday occurrences in faraway places, lonely posts along the line, window glimpses in the evening sunshine, people walking away with bags. As unobtrusive as all this seems to be, there is always a strange life in it. One has the impression of looking into the detail of a story, although the pictures abstract from everything anecdotal - one involuntarily begins to think about the before and after that cannot be seen in the pictures. Yet there is nothing voyeuristic about the photos - on the contrary: their special quality lies in the fact that they remain discreet and respect the private in every moment. Sometimes the usual gaze is even reversed: it is the photographer who is pryingly asked what she is looking for here. She is the foreigner - not the distant country she is visiting. In truth, it is not the tourist who looks at the world, but the world that looks at the tourist. Caution and tact therefore characterize Katrin Streicher's gaze: the knowledge that even attentive travelers can only understand the smaller part of what they see. It is the stranger's view that makes the special charm of these subtle and remarkable photos.
