As in many Arab countries undergoing upheaval, society in Egypt is deeply divided: on one side, the revolutionary longing for a Western influence, and on the other, the pursuit of strict religious restoration, with the military in between, taking advantage of the centrifugal situation to install a new autocratic regime. Partially obscured by the power struggles, a fundamental conflict is gaining significance: the one between the genders. Although the few women’s rights activists are still hardly heard, the message is clear: as long as women’s rights are disregarded, there can be no real societal progress. Against this backdrop, photographer Amélie Losier has traveled to Egypt multiple times to explore the question through her lens: What does it mean to be a woman in Egypt today? She has captured women from all social backgrounds.
