Suzanne Perrottet is a monumental figure in the development of modern dance. She was a pioneer at all the key points: in Geneva and Hellerau with Jaques-Dalcroze, on Monte Verità with Rudolf von Laban, in Zurich with Dada, in the 1920s during the pedagogical and therapeutic dissemination of new movement and expression forms, at the legendary Swiss National Exhibition in 1939, and after World War II as a renowned teacher and internationally sought-after jury member. The new dance, as developed by Suzanne Perrottet, Rudolf von Laban, Mary Wigmann, and others, was based on a life-reforming utopia: the new dance aimed to counteract the disharmony of body, soul, and spirit that had arisen as a consequence of modern industrial society. In free and expressive movement, there was seen the possibility of restoring natural, holistic harmony.
