Product details

"Fairy Tales from Cuba" is not a collection of Cuban fairy tales. Instead, the author has gathered fabricated stories that are circulated about Cuba, and in some cases, has even interviewed their authors. Whether it’s the sentimental horror story that a journalist based in New York and Miami presents to his readers as pure truth in the Cuba edition of "Merian," or the alleged violations of the right to health and freedom of religion that a Catholic weekly newspaper denounces and refuses to retract even after being corrected by the member of parliament who had unwittingly spread the tale. The justification: We will not portray Cuba as an idyll. This argument is one that Cardinal Meisner cannot oppose either, as he himself complains about unfounded claims being spread about him. The "Bild" newspaper, on the other hand, portrays Fidel Castro as a trainer of killer sharks off the coast of Florida, fully aware that the original report comes from a U.S. satire magazine that exclusively disseminates false news for the amusement of its readership. For Dr. Heinrich Maetzke from the "Bayernkurier," the keyword Guantanamo serves as an opportunity to recount the story of 15,000 prisoners shot in Cuba, but when the author asks him for sources, he falls silent. Fairy tales from Cuba indeed.
