Technological progress and the accompanying processes of boundary dissolution not only lead to profound changes in the economy, politics, and healthcare but also in mass media. At the same time, social change processes such as demographic change present modern societies with enormous health policy challenges. Based on contributions to the second annual conference of the Ad-hoc Group on Health Communication of the German Society for Journalism and Communication Studies in November 2014 in Mainz, this volume addresses the opportunities and challenges of social change for health communication from a communication science perspective. The focus is on theoretical approaches to the topic of health in the context of traditional mass media, health communication in the online sector, and health-related issues.
