The impact of entertainment-oriented design of political news in newspapers on reception is largely unclear. Does infotainment enhance understanding and knowledge transfer? Does it compromise credibility or informativeness? Can those with little interest in politics be drawn in by infotainment? Or does it repel recipients? There is hardly any empirical evidence to answer these questions. This study aims to help close this research gap. Through several experiments, it examines the effects of differently infotainment-heavy newspaper articles on various reception variables. The results, which are relevant not only for science but also for journalistic practice, suggest that infotainment is not a cure-all for generating greater interest in politics.
