Public relations has long become a part of political life and is utilized by politicians and parties for image management. It is also not new that governments hire PR firms to improve their image in other countries. However, it is less known that there have been commissioned and paid PR campaigns by very different governments for a long time, aimed at creating enemy images, preparing for wars, or glossing over dictatorships. This volume exemplifies, through the Balkan Wars and based on the analysis of 157 contracts between former Yugoslav clients and American PR agencies, how public relations is used for crisis and war communication. The authors examine how closed communication is achieved through PR strategies as a form of quasi-privatized propaganda.
